I'm looking at a '97 993 c4s with 93k miles. Car seems nice; I test drove, owner has all records from 4k miles. Claims oil leak from valve covers, drips about 1q every 2k miles. Few minor dings here and there, but overall seem like a nice car. I don't know much about newer 993's, and need some tips. Price is right on this vehicle, but I'm a little skittish about the milage. I own a '91 944s2 cab so I'm aware that p-cars are not cheap to own Anyone have any references to the reliability of this car, or have any experience with high miles 993's like this? Thanks for any help!

IMHO,.....One can safely buy a higher mileage 993 as long as a VERY through PPI is performed by someone skilled and experienced with these cars.
Further, I'd always want to see the maintenance records that verify all the oil changes and repairs made to the car. If that wasn't available, I'd make sure that the negotiated price accomodated any unplanned repairs.
Lastly, be aware that resolving some oil leaks can get very very expensive.
Hope this helps,

Thanks. I got to see all the records from 4k miles, and there were quite a few things done; the car looks (on paper) to be well maintained.
What sorts of oil leaks are expensive to fix on these cars (and approx how much)?
I'm actually going to get 2 PPI's on this car ... one in the state I found it in (as sort of a pre-qualification) and a second from the shop I know and trust. It is two checks, but between them I should be able to find anything serious.
Thanks! Any other tips or advice I can get is appreciated!

The 3.6 liter carrera motor is extremely over-engineered. I have added many miles to 3 of them, all without incident. To me, 150,000 is a lot of miles; 93,000 is just broke in. But if the car has been neglected, 30,000 miles are too many. So 2 PPI's is a good decision. Not because of the miles, or the records, but because any car can have problems and Porsches cost a lot to fix.
