Ok so I own 1999 Porsche Boxter which my wife loves but I have my eye on a 1997 C2 Coupe. I keep getting mixed messages about the safety of these lovely beats - any thoughts? Love the Boxter but will I love the 993?

Fish,
As a former Boxster owner (MY 2000) that moved on to a 993 I can give you a little bit of insight. The first thing and best advice I can give you is go drive some 993’s and determine if it is for you.
Both are great cars, but they are different. The 993 is more involving and gives more feed back to the driver along with a lot more power and low end torque. That said the Boxster is more refined. Personally I like the more “rawness” of the 993 but my wife, while she does like the 993, prefers our former Boxster.
Safety wise the 993 is not any less safe than the Boxster, nor is it any more difficult to drive under normal driving conditions. In casual driving a 993 is just as safe as your everyday Honda accord and maybe safer. I have taken my 993 to one DE (plan on doing more this next summer) and they are very forgiving. Basically if you don’t do anything stupid the 993’s are completely safe. From my understanding at the limit they have some different handling characteristics which you just have to learn how to handle (that’s what DE’s are for).
If you would like a more detailed comparison on specifics feel free to email me. You really can’t go wrong with either car. Have fun driving and deciding.

I have both a 99 boxster w/aero kit and 97 C2S. They are both enormously fun to drive but for different reasons. In my opinion no car can match the lines of the C2S widebody, but the best all-around sports car may well be the new Boxster S w/280 hp and mid engine balance. So many fine choices!

I felt I should add a little about the safety differences between the Boxster and the 993. The 993, with a rear engine configuration, can surprise you whenever traction is intermittant. The mid engine design of the Boxster provides a much slower loss of control under the same circumstances. These cars are not equally safe to the average or expert driver.
