I have a 96 993C2 that has a check engine code PO410 which indicates a secondary air induction problem w/ cyl 1-3. I had the Porsche Dealership service and they have stated the air pump and check valve is working fine the problem is an internal engine issue. They claim that the ports in heads are cloged and the solution for repair is too tear down the heads, clean ports and due valves if necessary... Cost of work 4-5K! My car does have 112K miles but has a good service record and I just cant believe there isnt another solution for this... Any one out there have any suggestions or opinions.
Thanks
Scott

I had that same problem (i think it was the same) about a year ago and Porsche paid for it. I have 96 996 c4 cab and had 52K miles, when i had the work done.
Can you talk to your dealer (or other porsche dealer) and see if Porsche would pay for it? it sounded like this is a common problem for NA (USA/Canada) spec 996 (96 and up).

My car throws a P0410 about twice a month. I bought some OBD software for my palm pilot, check the code, turn it off and drive on. This is not a driveability issue.

I can't believe I'm reading this, I have exactly the same thing going on with my 96 C4S. Went to the local dealer he had just done a carbon cleaning on the cam carier quoted the job at $3300.00, plus whatever else they can find. I can't find so much a picture of the cam carriers in my service manuals. If u have info on this problem and it my be under some defect that the dealer paid for, please forward it on! Is it really a "need to fix right now" type problem? sallen9735@aol.com

Talk to your Dealer about this,....Porsche is well aware of this problem and has quietly fixed many cars under warranty. Its not a cheap and easy fix. There is no effect on drivability, just emssions compliance and therefore in some places; license renewal.
The Palm-Pilot (and others) based scan tools do not work on OBD-I cars, only 96 and later OBD-II ones.
You need the Bosch Hammer to read and reset any codes on the '95 and earlier cars.

I just posted on Rennlist a DIY procedure to clean out the Secondary air injection ports. Do a search under "secondary air injection" or my name "Rob Kwate" and it should show up.
