My Porsche mechanic says that the 15w-50 Mobil 1 is the right oil to run in my 993. I read on the Mobil 1 web site that they recommend the 0w-40 weight oil. What are you guys running and why?
Thanks,

Your Porsche mechanic is correct. Pre-1999 cars are to use 15W50 while the later cars use 0W40. The Mobil 1 web site may be referring to the newer P-cars.

Bought a MY 1998 C4S (993) from second owner in FL. I live in Wisconsin. The car has always used Mobil 1 15W-50 and had 34K on the odo. I drove the car back home and wanted to change the oil after putting on 2K miles in a few weeks. The Porsche dealer recommended that I change to Mobil 1 0W-40 "European Car Formula." I told him the car was a 993 and had always used 15W-50. He said ECF is what Porsche wants the dealers to use. I checked Mobil 1's web site and it seemed to confirm what the service advisor told me so I made the switch. I have not noticed any oil "issues" since and have continued to drive the car in some pretty cold temps. Did the dealer make a mistake? If so, should I go back to 15W-50 at the next oil change? All input appreciated.

The guys at the PCA website (Porsche Club of America) say that you should be using 0W-40. Apparently, that was the factory fill and what they suggest, especially in cold weather. There was some info on the subject relating to hydraulic seals on valves or something like that, I'm no mechanic, but supposedly the 15W oil didn't allow them to seal properly at lower temps. Lots of good info there at that website, just go to the 993 section of the tech section and use the search to look up oil issues.

No, there is no problem using 0-40 in the 993. However, the factory fill was 15-50 and there is no problems using that oil either. The factory is now using 0-40 in the 996 and Boxster cars and just wants the dealers to use the same oils in some of the older cars because 0-40 works just as well.

I have been running 0-50 here in sunny Californiiiaaa, jsut made switch to 0-40 no difference, I assume the 50 is probably better when driving in Arizona in 110 degrees ;D

My CEL has been coming on with DTC P1411: SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM SIGNAL INCORECT (CYLS. 4-6). I've been told by two different shops that this DTC means my 96 993 with 67K miles needs a valve job because of the accumulation of carbon deposits. At an estimated cost of $5-10k, a valve job is not something I'm willing to undertake at this juncture.
That said, I just had an oil change and instead of putting 15-50, they put in Turco 10-40. When I asked why, their reply was that 15-50 may be contributing to the carbon deposits.
Being in Atlanta, I figured 15-50 was the correct weight.
Have any of you had a similar experience?
